I am just popping in to say hi and also that I was hacked last week. Apparently, friends and fam in my contact list received a message that I was in London and mugged. I have received the message before from other people and laughed.

Not so funny this time. Well okay. Slightly funny but with a huge plate of major annoyance for free. The thing is, while it was not my main correspondence account, it was the "forgot your credit card login" account. So there was/is high potential to go from major annoyance to outright catastrophe (think new motorcycles charged to cards and shipped to Mexico).

Fortunately, I remembered my security question and answer on my yahoo account, on day two, after about twelve tries.
Unfortunately, I did not remember my security question and answers on my gmail account.
Fortunately, gmail just shut my account off.
Unfortunately, the gmail account is my blogger admin account for this blog, so I don't have dashboard access.
Fortunately, I can post via email to the blog, but that's about it.

At this point, I've checked all my credit cards and I don't see any charges. I definitely am in the process of getting them reissued with new numbers. Just something to add to the bag of annoying tasks to do when you get hacked.

Hackers suck.

I'm sorry I didn't tell you about my trip ... I'm currently in wales In England, on a short vacation as I write this ... what happened today is unbelievable, and now I am stuck here. I got mugged at gun point on my way to the hotel and my money, credit cards, phone and other valuables were stolen. Thank God they did not take my passport. I urgently need your help. I had a good weigh in on Saturday: 154 pounds. My previous target is 150. I could tell over the course of the last few months that pants one size smaller were starting to fit again, so 154 is not totally surprising, but 160 has been more common the past year.

Well on Monday, I was crazy hungry. Like my body wanted to get back to 160. Like stupid hungry. WTF? And I don't think I was bad bad, but I was bad. Ate twice as much as normal meals. Come to think of it, I've been hungry all this week.

My parents don't have much of a retirement set up because my dad was self employed most of his life. After my mom's mother died, she inherited about $60k total. Three years ago she told me about some opportunity that my brother-in-law had found. I told her to do research on it and to please not do anything without contacting an attorney first. I didn't hear much about it after that. About a year later she told me that their "investment" that they had made with my brother-in-law was seeing ridiculous returns and they were going to be able to retire a few years early. I was upset that they hid it from me because "I didn't know anything about it and would have just gotten mad at them." Another year had passed and I asked her when she would be getting her money back and how much they had invested. She told me that they had given $40,000 and it should be coming back any time now. It's been 17 months since they were supposedly getting it back. About 6 months ago my sister told my mom "well wouldn't you be happy if you just got your initial investment back?" but wouldn't elaborate anymore.

My mom told me the other day that they finally stopped "asking" about it because my sister would get mad at them. My brother-in-law was not the one that pocketed the money as he put money into it as well as his parents. He signed a non-disclosure agreement that stops him from talking about what exactly it is that he sent the money off to. I asked my mom if I could see the paperwork from the investment and she told me that all she had was the receipt from the cashiers check that she sent them. To me, it sounds like they were nailed by some ponzi scheme and I don't even know if they have any actions that they can take here. I think deep down my mom knows that the money is gone but she keeps telling me that they are supposed to be getting the money back, next month. That's the same story that it has been for the past year. My mom doesn't want to ruin the relationship with my sister, as she has always been their favorite.

It breaks my heart knowing that my father had to change his line of work last year at 59 years old to an $11 an hour job, just to make ends meet. He probably won't be able to retire until he is at least 70 now, if at all ever. Fucking with me is one thing, but fucking with my parents who have worked their whole lives is something that I have a hard time coming to terms with.

TLDR: Brother-in-law got my parents to put $40k into some investment and now it looks like they aren't getting any of it back.

Back in the good ole days, my signature moniker was "angry monkey" or "monkey [is] angry!".

It's a reference to a social experiment some university researchers did with monkeys. They made a monkey do a task, and gave him three grapes. Then they made the next monkey do the same task, but gave him six grapes. Needless to say, the first monkey was not a happy camper. After bouts of anger, screeching, and poo flinging, he became sullen and depressed and refused to participate in any more researchers.

My current job is a real meat grinder. Suffice it to say, stress levels are high. Long story short, big project was promised within too short of a time frame and now its time to sprint the wagons to the finish line. I'm trying to gauge whether this is a regular thing. The PMs have been putting in 80 hour weeks and I think they expect the same of the regulars. It's not uncommon to get an email at 11pm.

To be honest, I don't mind the long hours if a) they didn't take me away from the family, and b) I got a pat on the back for it. But the PMs... if you finish early, they would still tell you how behind you are. Seriously, dudes?

The 'tude was old way before it was even an option. The place is more live to work and I guess I'm more of a work to live kind of guy.

So I busted my ass last week and pulled a 65 hour work week because... we had a deadline, so I took one for the team. Then I got pulled into a "chat" where, tete-a-tete, "Johnny you been pulling too many hours and let's see if we can work smarter not harder..."

Wow. Not the greatest thing to hear after giving 25 uncompensated hours to your company. I was a smidge irked. However, it's been four days now and I think I can deal with it. I mean, seriously, I'm not looking for advancement or a pay raise and covertly took this associate position so I could have more family time (wouldn't you expect the seniors to be more responsible). I think I'm at a point where going home after 40 sounds like a good idea. And with all the non-sleep I'm getting, that sounds better and better.

sigh.

Time to put on the religion hat and say, "This is all part of the Almighty's plan."

Long story short, through the magic of HBO Signature channel and DVR, I got a copy and, it was pretty heart wrenching. I just hated to see two girls and a dad go through that, even if it was fictional. War is bad, folks, and if you don't get that, then go back to Fox News, where we are still at war with the Nazis or the anti-Semites, or whoever is still the boogey man that justifies the second amendment.

Time for a heart warming story! (Thanks reddit)

I was day tripping to Vancouver from Seattle and stopped in for lunch at a little cafe. From my window I saw a young teenage girl out in the cold, squatted down in a closed up businesses doorway, holding a small bundle in her arms. She was panhandling, people were mostly walking by ignoring her. She looked just broken.

I finished up my meal and went outside, went through my wallet and thought I'd give her $5 for some food. I got up to her and she was sobbing, she looked like she was 14-15. And that bundle in her arms was a baby wrapped up. I felt like I just got punched in the chest. She looked up putting on a game face and asked for any change, I asked her if she's like some lunch. Right next door was a small quick-Trip type grocery store, I got a can of formula for the baby (very young, maybe 2-3 months old.), and took her back to the cafe though I'd just eaten. She was very thankful, got a burger and just inhaled it. Got her some pie and ice cream. She opened up and we talked. She was 15, got pregnant, parents were angry and she was fighting with them. She ran away. She's been gone almost 1 full year.

I asked her if she's like to go home and she got silent. I coaxed her, she said her parents wouldn't want her back. I coaxed further, she admitted she stole 5k in cash from her Dad. Turns out 5k doesn't last long at all and the streets are tough on a 15 year old. Very tough. She did want to go back, but she was afraid no one wanted her back after what she did.

We talked more, I wanted her to use my phone to call home but she wouldn't. I told her I'd call and see if her folks wanted to talk to her, she hesitated and gave bad excuses but eventually agreed. She dialed the number and I took the phone, her Mom picked up and I said hello. Awkwardly introduced myself and said her daughter would like to speak to her, silence, and I heard crying. Gave the phone to the girl and she was just quiet listening to her Mom cry, and then said hello. And she cried. They talked, she gave the phone back to me, I talked to her Mom some more.

I drove her down to the bus station and bought her a bus ticket home. Gave her $100 cash for incidentals, and some formula, diapers, wipes, snacks for the road.

Got to the bus, and she just cried saying thank you over and over. I gave her a kiss on the forehead and a hug, kissed her baby, and she got on the bus.

I get a chistmas card every year from her. She's 21 now and in college.

Her name is Makayla and her baby was Joe.

I've never really told anyone about this. I just feel good knowing I did something good in this world. Maybe it'll make up for the things I've f-ed up.

I may or not be an HOV scofflaw. What really surprises me, though, is that you would expect state troopers all over the place just looking to hand out $600 fines, but all you really see is other scofflaws with no passengers in their car. I also wondered this morning, how my car is in a lot of ways very much like an office -- just like state troopers. And then I went the extra logical step -- do you think when they retire, they just sit in their cars in a parking lot. I mean, it is strangely meditative to be in your "office" and just looking through your mail or whatnot.

Also this morning DC 101 was talking about organ donors and how it might save someone's life. Kinda made me think because I am not an organ donor... but if I'm not going to use my organs any more, wouldn't someone else be better off with them?

* What a train wreck the whole John and Kate +8 has become. That thing went from, "omg, eight kids!" to "tragic" and then to "gossip rag vultures circling the carcass". And you know these kids are all gonna be traumatized and stuff down the road. I would LOL but its really a sadLOL. Now, from a guy's pov, there's no living with a hellbitch like Kate. I think early on in the series, she kept a good lid on her control freak, but now that she's empowered and totally celebritized... she's kind of got an Adolf Hitler thing going on.

* Second item is this CNN story about fallen soldiers, and a small blurb about how "they felt called to duty". It's just ironic that the people who are called to duty are the people getting fragged thanks to the negligence of idiot politicians (and armchair generals). What does it say that the people who are "selfish", driven by careers or wealth acquisition, are doing better than these guys? I don't know but it's certainly something they don't teach you in school.

Ugh. Monday. At least traffic flowed pretty well.

About yesterday's blog, I wouldn't ever really run away. I'm too cheap, in all probability. I recall a funny Married With Children where Al went on "vacation" but it was just him sitting on the couch for a week. Besides, once everyone settled down last night, I was able to iron my shirt, read a few core chapters of my book and surf youtube again (found a great ten minute cut from Blade Runner).

It's possible I will be tired today. If so... meh.

I'm starting a new job on Monday, and while I won't miss the work, I will miss a lot of really awesome people here. In fact, I really consider some of the "pod nine" people to be "my" kind of people. You know, the ones that know what a saving throw is, commodore 64, Thieves World, talking about decision trees, Protoss drones and other nerdy stuff.

I always wonder, "will I see you again" and I always think, "I hope so."

Plane is crashing?

Our plane took off from Heathrow International West, which is located on a small island just across the street from Heathrow International (it was being closed). Anyhow, as the plane took off we soared between these thirty story overpasses (for cars) and forty story ramps (for airplanes). Then the pilot scraped the bottom of the plane on a overpass and the plane started dropping. I think we fell like twenty thousand feet. Thankfully the plane finally recovered and was able to fly.

And that was my dream.

My neighbor's wife was in the Pentagon on 9/11. I can't imagine what it would be like to lose my spouse. It's only been eight years but if I had died eight years ago... I would never had gotten married, gone on a cruise, seen all my nieces and nephew come into this world, met my daughter. That's just the tip of the iceberg.

Johnny has absolutely no time for blogging, but I just wanted to pop up on the grid and comment on what has fascinations and notes..

* Air France 447 going down in the middle of the ocean, and being obsessively and morbidly fascinated by what might have gone wrong in those final ten minutes. Also the black boxes are four miles down. Why can't a submarine go grab them? Submarines can only go 0.75 of a mile before they get crushed that's why.

* Michael Jackson passed away, age 50. Makes you wonder about your own life and did you do everything you wanted to when the day was over.

* Electric Light Orchestra of 70s and 80s fame, who I dismissed because, c'mon now, they basically sang the soundtrack for Xanadu -- Xanadu!!! (Newsflash from the 80s -- Roller Disco is dead! and by dead we mean tacky). But by some serendipity I found their Time album and it is pretty rocking (Thanks Wiki for entries on autotuner and Cher/Believe).

* AC Unit at rental failed and Johnny will be out a good 4k very shortly.

Once upon a time, there lived a boy named Johnny.. who got locked out of his house. And by once upon a time, I mean twice actually. So like any normal boy with such an affliction, he vowed never to be locked out again, and with that, he wrapped a spare house key in foil, and prudently hid it under a rock. Or under a flower pot. Or in a flower pot. Or somewhere... very safe! In the back yard.

You know where this is going.

Johnny can't find the key anymore. Not that he really needs it at the moment, but it would be nice. Also it would be somewhat prudent to locate it before wrapping another key in foil and hiding it in the backyard, one would think.

Johnny basically has no rutting idea where it is. Boo!!

My aunt passed away over the weekend. I think she was 75 or so, so its not entirely unexpected. Also, I had heard reports that she had alzheimers and had shrunk to 90 pounds or so -- all telling signs of being near the end. Still, it's a very odd feeling. One reason is possibly because she is the last of my dad's siblings - so now they are all gone. That finality is very sobering.

Another aspect of this is, as we get older, I suppose we just have to come to terms that we are reaching that age where we are going to bury more and more of the people we love. All our aunts and uncles. It's funny because in some ways they sometimes seemed so alien but they always loved you. One never envisioned the world where they are all gone -- and the realization of that world is a very sad one.

I had my performance review today. The CTO pretty much said everyone got the same ranking. For the record, these are just stupid ratings to justify raises. If someone gets a five then they really have to shell out. The subcontractors laugh at them anyways. They own their own company so they don't have annual reviews. Even though I got the same score as everyone else, part of me was a bit disappointed for not getting a super rating. I guess I'll blame it on being a middle child and always being ignored. Pffft.

The thing is, for me to achieve an outstanding, I would really have to put in crazy sixty hour or eighty hour weeks for a consistent period of time. It boils down to a decision. Do you want to go home and have some quality time with your wife/family/kids or do you want that gold star at the end of the year. In the end, it always comes back to.. what's more important? Your job or your life. And to be honest, if I sacrificed a little bit so I could only work 42 hours a week to be home with my fam -- I shouldn't have anything to feel bad about!

The compressor in our refrigerator is running, but only as a courtesy. The hunk of junk is mildly cool on the freezer side and almost room temperature on the fridge side. Also, a diary product has started to smell bitter. Could it be the sour cream?

I've always been intrigued about my eyesight since my sister has 20/20 and I took the test years ago (like age ten) and had 20/40... but never needed glasses. You would think that staring at monitors and TVs all day my eyes would degrade to mulch but I just took an [unofficial] eye exam and it scored me as 20/20.

Well it's official. I have been having paranoid delusions at night.

For some reason, when my wife moves or rolls over, I unconciously think that she's going to fall off the bed, and I end up actually lunging over to her side of the bed with my arm flung out to stop her. Of course, once I wake up, I realize
#1 that she is nowhere near the edge of the bed and
#2 even if she fell the two/three feet, that she's an adult and it wouldn't hurt her too bad.

Still, the fact that I am sleep-lunging is quite uncanny.

command + arrow up = page up
command + arrow down = page down
option + arrow up = tab up one screen length
option + arrow down = tab down one screen length
option + click on pictures = right click on pictures to save
fn + delete = delete letters to the right of the cursor

Obviously you want these if you want to navigate web pages without using a mouse since you only get this touch pad here and it can be clumsy.

My wife has made me a batch of cupcakes. She was out of frosting so I got her some Betty Crocker vanilla frosting. I forgot how she puts three tablespoons on every cup. I enjoy the frosting a little bit, but nothing beats a fresh, frosting-less cupcake straight out of the oven. Still, I smile and tell her its the best even though I take most of the frosting off at work. It's the same thing you do when she cooks the steak twenty minutes so the inside is grey and rubbery. You smile and tell her it's the best steak ever. Then you go to Sweet Water the next day for lunch and get a nice filet with a hot pink center. Yum yum!

Today's upside is that I got a new work computer... Core 2 Duo with three GB of RAM, compared to the old three year old Pentium 4 with two GB of RAM. I can't tell if it's smoking yet because my servers are not installed yet.. haha!

Today's downside is I checked a website I own through GoDaddy and I still can't make heads or tails of their very confusing interface. Allegedly I am supposed to be able to upload files, etc. etc. but everything I do does not work... Monkey Angry!!!

I finally had White Kastle burgers. I guess the chain finally got wise and is now selling these microwavable two packs in stores and snack bars. The latter is where I found mine. You just nuke em for 35 seconds and bam... ready to go! And I have to say.. they're not bad. I mean, course you can't set your bar too high, right? But they had a very fast food McDonalds quality about them. The meat looks like a sliver of pate and the cheese is Cheeze whiz for sure. Still, I can get why people like em. I think I'm going to have to shoot for a store next time through NJ and order a whole tray of those guys. Time to see if they have a website/locator.
